Set during the American Civil War, the story follows Johnny Gray, an engineer whose prized locomotive, called The General, is stolen by Union spies. The spies also take Annabelle, Johnny's girlfriend, who is traveling in a boxcar attached to the train. Determined to recover both his locomotive and Annabelle, Johnny embarks on a solo mission to track down the stolen train and rescue her.
