In this society, independent thought and personal freedom are suppressed. Winston, a low-level worker, secretly begins an illegal love affair, which puts him at odds with the regime. As a result, he becomes the focus of a government campaign aimed at re-educating him and forcing him to abandon his dissenting beliefs and return to complete obedience.
