Vada Sultenfuss, a young girl living with her father who owns a funeral home, is deeply affected by the loss of her mother and has a strong fascination with death. She develops a crush on her English teacher and decides to join a summer poetry class to get closer to him. Vada's best friend, Thomas J., who often complains about being allergic to many things, remains loyal to her despite her emotional struggles. The situation becomes more complicated when Vada's father hires a woman named Shelly and starts to develop feelings for her, leading to unexpected challenges for Vada and those around her.
