Quick Synopsis
Lars is a very shy man who struggles to connect with others and make friends. Concerned about his isolation, his brother and sister-in-law are relieved when Lars tells them he has a girlfriend he met online. However, this girlfriend is actually a life-sized doll made of plastic. Following the recommendation of a doctor, Lars's family and the local community choose to support him by treating the doll as if she were a real person, helping Lars cope with his social difficulties.
Detailed Synopsis of Lars and the Real Girl
Extremely shy Lars finds it impossible to make friends or socialize. His brother and sister-in-law worry about him, so when he announces that he has a girlfriend he met on the Internet, they are overjoyed. But Lars' new lady is a life-size plastic woman. On the advice of a doctor, his family and the rest of the community go along with his delusion.
