Peter Bretter, an aspiring musician, is devastated when his girlfriend, actress Sarah Marshall, leaves him for the famous rock star Aldous Snow. To help him recover, Peter's best friend Brian recommends a trip to Hawaii to get some distance from his heartbreak. Once in Hawaii, Peter meets Rachel Jansen, a charming receptionist, and begins to find some comfort. However, his attempt to move on is complicated when he unexpectedly encounters both Sarah and Aldous at the same resort, forcing him to confront his feelings and the situation he hoped to escape.

When actress Sarah Marshall dumps aspiring musician Peter Bretter for rock star Aldous Snow, Peter's world comes crashing down. His best friend Brian suggests that Peter should get away from everything and to fly off to Hawaii to escape all his problems. After arriving in Hawaii and meeting the beautiful receptionist Rachel Jansen, Peter is shocked to see not only Aldous in Hawaii, but also Sarah.
