At her wedding ceremony in a small English town, Rachel spots Luce in the audience and feels an immediate connection. As they develop a close friendship, Rachel discovers that Luce is a lesbian, which leads her to question her own feelings and sexual identity. Although Rachel is married to Heck and has a stable, comfortable life, she finds herself increasingly attracted to Luce.
