Quick Synopsis
Tomas, a successful surgeon living in Prague, travels away for an operation and meets Tereza, a young photographer, whom he invites to return with him to the city. Tereza soon discovers that Tomas is involved in an affair with Sabina, a free-spirited artist. When the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia forces them to flee, Tomas, Tereza, and Sabina relocate to Switzerland. There, Sabina starts a new relationship, Tomas continues his pattern of casual relationships, and Tereza, feeling disillusioned, decides to go back to Czechoslovakia. Realizing he has made a mistake, Tomas chooses to follow her and try to reconcile.
Detailed Synopsis of The Unbearable Lightness of Being
Successful surgeon Tomas leaves Prague for an operation, meets a young photographer named Tereza, and brings her back with him. Tereza is surprised to learn that Tomas is already having an affair with the bohemian Sabina, but when the Soviet invasion occurs, all three flee to Switzerland. Sabina begins an affair, Tom continues womanizing, and Tereza, disgusted, returns to Czechoslovakia. Realizing his mistake, Tomas decides to chase after her.
