After Bruno's family relocates from their home in Berlin to a house near a concentration camp in Poland during World War II, he meets Shmuel, a Jewish boy imprisoned on the other side of a barbed-wire fence, where prisoners wear striped uniforms. Bruno does not understand that Shmuel is a prisoner or that his father, a Nazi officer, is responsible for running the camp. Despite this, Bruno forms a secret friendship with Shmuel and eventually ventures inside the camp, unaware of the risks involved.
