The Ballad of Narayama

In a remote village located in a valley, there is a tradition that requires all residents who turn 70 to leave the village and go to a specific mountain to spend their final days. Refusing to follow this custom is considered a dishonor to one's family. Orin, an elderly woman who is about to turn 70, faces this fate as winter approaches. Before she leaves, she wants to ensure that her eldest son, Tatsuhei, is settled by finding him a wife, so that he can continue the family line and support the household after her departure.
