Quick Synopsis
In 8th-century China, after the Emperor loses his wife, the influential Yang family seeks to strengthen their power at court by offering a new consort to him. General An Lushan discovers a distant relative of the Yangs working in their kitchen and helps prepare her to meet the Emperor. The Emperor soon falls in love with her, and she is made Princess Yang Kwei-fei. Following her rise, the Yang family members receive key ministerial roles, but An Lushan remains frustrated as he does not obtain the court position he desires.
Detailed Synopsis of Princess Yang Kwei-fei
In 8th-century China, the Emperor grieves the death of his wife. The Yang family wants to provide the Emperor with a consort so that they may consolidate their court influence. General An Lushan finds a distant relative working in their kitchen, whom they groom to present to the Emperor. The Emperor falls in love and she becomes the Princess Yang Kwei-fei. The Yangs are then appointed important ministers, though An Lushan is not given the court position he covets.
