Set in rural Texas during the Great Depression in 1935, the story follows Edna Spaulding, a recently widowed woman trying to manage her farm and care for her two young children with limited financial resources. As she faces challenges including a devastating tornado and threats from the Ku Klux Klan in her community, Edna receives support from her sister Margaret, who works as a beautician; Mr. Will, a blind man renting a room in her home; and Moze, a man with a troubled past who offers to teach her how to cultivate and harvest cotton to sustain the family farm.
Detailed Synopsis of Places in the Heart
In 1935 rural Texas, recently widowed Edna Spaulding struggles to survive with two small children, a farm to run, and very little money in the bank - not to mention a deadly tornado and the unwelcome presence of the Ku Klux Klan. Edna is aided by her beautician sister, Margaret; a blind boarder, Mr. Will; and a would-be thief, Moze, who decides to teach Edna how to plant and harvest cotton.
