In Coalwood, a small West Virginia coal mining town, John Hickam is a miner. He loves his job and he expects his son, Homer, to follow in his footsteps. But Homer becomes fascinated by rockets after seeing Sputnik 1 in the sky. John disapproves of his son's new passion. However, Homer begins building rockets with the help of friends and a sympathetic teacher. Homer hopes that rocket science can offer him a better life.
