Set in 1860s Paris, the story follows Therese, a young woman forced into a loveless marriage with her frail husband Camille by her controlling aunt, Madame Raquin. Therese works behind the counter of a small shop during the day and spends her evenings watching Madame Raquin play dominos with a diverse group of acquaintances. When Therese meets Laurent, a charming friend of her husband, she begins a secret affair with him. This relationship ultimately leads to serious and tragic consequences.
