Quick Synopsis

Sam, a man with a developmental disability, becomes a single father when the mother of his daughter Lucy, who is homeless, leaves them shortly after Lucy's birth. Sam raises Lucy in their community, but as she grows older, his challenges in providing care lead child protective services to intervene and remove Lucy from his custody. Determined to regain custody, Sam persuades a successful lawyer named Rita to represent him without charge. Through their work together, Sam helps Rita understand the deeper meaning of love and family beyond legal definitions.

Detailed Synopsis of I Am Sam

Sam, a neurodivergent man, has a daughter with a homeless woman who abandons them when they leave the hospital, leaving Sam to raise Lucy on his own. But as Lucy grows up, Sam's limitations as a parent start to become a problem and the authorities take her away. Sam convinces high-priced lawyer Rita to take his case pro bono and in turn teaches her the value of love and family.
