In 1960s Baltimore, Tracy Turnblad, a cheerful and confident teenager who is considered pleasantly plump, fulfills her dream of becoming a regular dancer on the popular Corny Collins Dance Show. As she gains popularity, Tracy uses her new platform to advocate for racial integration and equality, which puts her at odds with Amber Von Tussle, the show's former star, and Amber's parents, who strongly support segregation. Their conflict escalates as both girls compete for the Miss Auto Show 1963 title, highlighting the social tensions of the time.
Detailed Synopsis of Hairspray
'Pleasantly plump' teenager Tracy Turnblad achieves her dream of becoming a regular on the Corny Collins Dance Show. Now a teen hero, she starts using her fame to speak out for the causes she believes in, most of all integration. In doing so, she earns the wrath of the show's former star, Amber Von Tussle, as well as Amber's manipulative, pro-segregation parents. The rivalry comes to a head as Amber and Tracy vie for the title of Miss Auto Show 1963.
