East of Eden

Set in the Salinas Valley during the time around World War I, the story follows Cal Trask, a young man who struggles with feelings of rivalry toward his brother as they both seek their father's approval and affection. Cal faces challenges not only in his family relationships, including a distant connection with his mother, but also in his attempts to find his place in the world, dealing with the impact of the war and trying to succeed in business and life despite constant setbacks.
