In a near-future setting, a woman diagnosed with a terminal illness chooses to undergo a cloning procedure so that her friends and family will not have to grieve her loss. Unexpectedly, she recovers fully, but when she tries to cancel the clone, the authorities refuse. This results in a legal decision requiring the original and the clone to settle their existence through a duel to the death.
