This spin-off story continues after the TV special Dragon Ball Z: Bardock - The Father of Goku. In it, Bardock, the father of Goku, survives the destruction of Planet Vegeta. He is then mysteriously sent back in time, where he encounters and fights Chilled, an ancestor of the villain Frieza. During this battle, Bardock transforms into a Super Saiyan for the first time.
